ADHD in Children

As parents we are always worrying about our children, including their physical and mental well-being. Symptoms of ADHD in children can present themselves as early as age 3 or in most cases before the age of 12. Symptoms can be mild, moderate or severe, as well as carry into adulthood. Symptoms include a mixture of hyperactivity, inattention and impulsivity.

Some ways in which ADHD can manifest in children can be:

  • Self centered behavior or inability to understand other people’s needs,
  • feelings or desires.
  • Trouble waiting their turn
  • Interrupting others
  • Fidgeting
  • Lack of focus or leaving tasks unfinished
  • Avoidance of tasks requiring extended mental effort
  • Inability to play quietly
  • Disorganized or general forgetfulness

Many of these are common in younger children so just because your child has trouble waiting their turn or is going through the “me” stage, doesn’t mean they necessarily have ADHD. We also recommend for any concern about physical and mental issues, please consult a professional such as your pediatrician.

However, if your child does have ADHD, Storybook can help with that too. Children with ADHD are more prone to nightmares and sleep disorders, such as restless leg syndrome. A bedtime routine might take longer with your child but children with ADHD can thrive with routines. Encourage daytime physical activity and be consistent with your bedtime routine.

Use Storybook as a tool to help you because children with special needs can be exhausting and both your child and you need good sleep.
